I discovered that one of the Pacific Loons was back, and the first breeding plumaged Purple Sandpiper I’ve seen (having only seen them on fall migration), and Arctic Hare cavorting in their changing coats. In breeding plumage! And now mergansers.

According to their website , Lassen Volcanic National Park provides habitat for approximately 216 species of birds in which 96 have been known to actually breed in the park. Near Summit Lake we have been able to witness Williamson’s Sapsuckers ( Sphyrapicus thyroideus ) raising their young in a snag near the campground.

Egyptian Vultures raised is isolation used rocks to crack eggs presented to them. Interestingly some of these ponds are favored by these herons for foraging and have ducks that are fed by people. These ponds and the larger Cedar Lake and collection pond hold Tufted Duck , Greylag Goose and Eurasian Moorhen. The Black Swans were adopted to the trust’s coat of arms and breed here during the northern winter. A few other remnants of the former collections might raise eyebrows in some circles.

The most common member of the Grebe species around Broome is the Australasian Grebe- Tachybaptus novaehollandiae and it has taken advantage of our exceptionally good Wet Season early this year and has been breeding very successfully. Our first stop was Cable Beach to find the Pied Oystercatchers in their territory even though the breeding season is over. There were plenty of Australian Pelicans, Royal Spoonbills, Black-winged Stilt and Gull-billed Terns, but the numbers were down on the Plumed Whistling Ducks which normally line the edge of the ponds in their thousands.

Mallards , of course, bring new meaning to the term dabbling duck , what with all those wild mallard hybrids and domestic cross-breeds running around. It features lakes which can usually be relied upon for Neotropic Cormorant and White-faced Whistling Duck on the water with Kiskadees seemingly perched on every bank-side tree. As with Chinese male humans, having your own building is still vital to raising young. There was a breeding pair at Binjiang Forest Park this June. The one for bird photographers (a Spot-billed Duck ) is shown below. So, the birds start collecting mud and small sticks. Nest building: a good activity for a rainy day.
