Which these days involves a frenzy to breed and raise a brood. I discovered that one of the Pacific Loons was back, and the first breeding plumaged Purple Sandpiper I’ve seen (having only seen them on fall migration), and Arctic Hare cavorting in their changing coats. In breeding plumage! And now mergansers.

It is a little tradition we started when we were not both working on Christmas Day and a great way to pass the day when you don’t have family in the same state or time zone! Our first stop was Cable Beach to find the Pied Oystercatchers in their territory even though the breeding season is over. Pink-eared Ducks and Grey Teal.

The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. Like most maps, colors are used to indicate seasonal status (breeding resident, Austral migrant/visitor, Boreal migrant, etc.). Distribution maps are also different from other field guides.

I knew I would not be seeing the bird in its rosy-breasted breeding plumage, but somehow seeing the bird in all its forms helped crystallize its appearance in my head. or birds that look very different in their breeding and non-breeding plumages (Shorebirds! I studied it. Sadly, I still did not see the bird.

Another 170 are in captivity, many of them breeding stock for reintroduction efforts. Letters from Eden (Houghton Mifflin, 2006) will soon be followed by a memoir about the birds she has raised, healed, studied and followed throughout her life. There are 400 whooping cranes left in the wild, 100 of them in the eastern population.

My librarian self is partial to a more strict taxonomic organization, but with no hope that the constant shifting of families will end in the near future, this type of sequence is making more and more sense. The book’s organization reflects the authors’ goal of making this a guide accessible to birders of all levels and skill.
