Having said all that, I’ll give some context by showing, once again, an image I included in my post just last week: This photo, downloaded from a birders’ chat, shows Lake Cuitzeo on Monday, February 5th. Both species can theoretically breed in central Mexico, but in my experience are almost exclusively winter visitors.

What the rings reveal

Black-tailed godwits winter in large numbers on the estuaries of both Norfolk and Suffolk, and we know that nearly all these birds breed in Iceland. In breeding plumage islandica godwits develop a deeper red plumage than their limosa cousins. Only when I downloaded my images did I spot the ring, which was clear and easy to read (2BAT).

Birding and Safari-ing South Africa with the ABA

to the ongoing conservation of breeding Lesser Flamingos at Kimberley’s Kamfers Dam to the Albatross Task Force, which works with fishermen to find solutions to seabird bycatch (birds caught in fishermen’s nets). The small group was a good counterpart to the large, convivial ABA Safari group of 98 birders.
