Some people think it’s just plain fun to kill enormous numbers of animals and pile up their bodies, and when there’s no “bag limit” it’s legal to do so. Obviously killing contests have nothing to do with traditional hunting, and “animal abuse” is normally used when describing domestic animals.

For instance, assume (and I will NOT stand by this number, it is just one I’ve heard here and there) that kitty cats in America kill 50,000,000 birds a year. Hardly any Sandhill Cranes are killed by domestic (including ferrel domestic) cats. Makes you think.

I kill them.”*. Do we really want a bird to be named after a man who was proud of killing birds instead of protecting them? Sadly, I haven’t been able to come up with a better name for the magnificent creature currently named after a Boston Brahmin who liked to shoot things. Definitely not!

As a talked to a couple from Boston, new to birding, I spotted a Clapper Rail walking close behind us. I did bring my spotting scope with me, but it really wasn’t necessary here. Clapper Rail. Back to the Flats. This was a mature bird and if I lightened this photo you’d be able to see the red gular sac deflated against its chest.
