Birding the Eshowe area, South Africa

As usual, my experience with such boardwalks was somewhat underwhelming, as was Eshowe as a whole, but there were still a few birds worth mentioning at the forest and in the area surrounding Eshowe. At vulture family gatherings, it is always a bit of a bother for the organizers to cater to the needs of the Palm Nut Vulture.

Accessibility Matters

So armed with some knowledge from the “ Access Considerations for Birding Locations ” page on the Birdability website and some research, I twice visited the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge near Portland, Oregon with accessibility in mind. A 5% grade is steeper than I thought, but research suggests that 5% is acceptable.

Not enough Woodpeckers

The HBW entry for the Downy Woodpecker (Reno, USA) illustrates a common phenomenon – apparently, the more a species is known, the more subjects for further research pop up. The main point of having self-imposed rules when writing a blog is to break them whenever desired. Kind of like a diesel version.

Steve Howell has spent decades of experience in the field studying the birds of Belize, Costa Rica, and especially Mexico. And Sandwich Tern is Sandwich Tern, Howell finding the DNA research for splitting it “weak.” I don’t think scientific artwork holds less value when used more than once.
