Farm animals also benefit from the humane farming movement, even if the animal welfare changes it effects are not all that we should hope and work for. Go vegan, go vegetarian, go humane or just eat less meat. If we all decide to consider animals as precious as humans, the only logical place for us is back in the jungle.

To the Editor: Re “ Humanity Even for Nonhumans ,” by Nicholas D. If human beings were confined, mutilated and killed, would we call it “humane” if the cages were a few inches bigger, the knife sharper, the death faster? Animals rescued from so-called humane farming establishments have been found in horrific condition.

Riddle me this: Why would any human animal use as a default position that nonhuman animals do not have personalities as rich, distinct, obnoxious, obsequious and varied as human animals? Why is it surprising that nonhuman animals have personalities when human animals do? No one is assigning human traits to nonhumans.

Yes, it was one of those rare birds that is foraging right in front of you, in this case in a bed of small purple flowers, too close to photograph. Then, for no discernible reason, the bird flew! Peering over the fence, next to the ‘don’t climb the rocks’ sign, I observed the bird bathing in a small stream of water and left him there.
