The Siberian Rubythroat seems to somewhat lack a proper inbuilt GPS system – while it breeds as far west as the Ural Mountains and winters as far est as Central India, it does not migrate through central Asia in large numbers (even though this would be the shortest way). So better not let a rubythroat bite you. .

It is kind of rare to see a Fairy Pitta during Shanghai’s spring migration as those passing through are all adults rather than inexperienced chicks, and they are in a rush getting to their breeding grounds – but I was lucky. This should not be a problem in Shanghai as the pitta has not been reported to breed here.

The latter is possible, as the undisturbed areas of Nanhui keep shrinking, leaving less and less space for birds. Christmas Shearwaters Much less common that their larger relatives, but at the same time their habit of surface breeding means they are always around to find in certain spots. Some of the Grey-tailed Tattlers have managed to find some shade from the 39c (102f) temperature under the large rock, but mostly the birds are relying on the cooler temperature on the wet sand and rocks after the tide has dropped. Most of the Red Knot are in very good breeding plumage now and they do stand out very well on the grey rocks.
