The population of Australia is concentrated mainly around the city areas along the coast and many invasive species have been able to spread with ease.

This week finds us flying from Melbourne, Australia, to Alice Springs, in the center of this incredibly large country. This is truly the center if Australia, no matter what method you use to decided the actual location of dead center. But the diversity, that I have found to be Australia, remains.

Birding across the north of Australia in July

In Australia it is winter in July, but the weather is as perfect as you could hope for in the north of the country with daytime temperatures around 30c/86f and the night-time temperatures being around 20c/68f and rarely a cloud in the sky. Sunsets got later and we enjoyed many a beautiful evening in the bush as you can see in the above photo.

Queensland’s First Nordmann’s Greenshank

Down here in Australia one can be a birder for a long time without experiencing a proper twitch. This was the first record for my home state of Queensland, indeed a first record for anywhere in Australia away from the north west area of Western Australia. Nordmann’s Greenshank on the Cairns Esplanade [Adrian Walsh].

A Brief Coastal Visit to Oz

As my opening word suggests; the Sunshine Coast is located in Australia as the attached Google map illustrates. As in North America this tattler loves the rockier outcrops down here in Australia too. We were also lucky enough to see a beautiful pair of Sacred Kingfishers hunting along the coastal edge. One is pictured below.

New Zealand and Australia are joining forces to carry out research on whales using non-lethal methods, in an attempt to challenge Japan's hunting programme. Tags: australia whales new zealand Japan. It's non-lethal. Eighteen scientists will set sail for Antarctica next month to study minke, humpback and blue whale populations.
