A couple of weeks ago I mentioned the Black Kites breeding around Broome. There have also been Whistling Kites breeding around Broome in recent weeks. It is always rewarding to observe successful breeding in wildlife and we are fortunate here in Broome that so many bird species breed around the area.

Magpie Geese breed near Broome once again

We continue to bird-watch from the bitumen and rain continues to fall across the north of Australia. Magpie Geese stood on gates to get away from the flooded landscape We are always conscious of the fact that every flood event in the north of Australia brings cane toads closer to Broome.

Black-tailed Godwits around Broome

In Australia we encounter the subspecies Limosa limosa melanuroides. The Black-tailed Godwits that we observe here in Australia breed in east Siberia and Mongolia. In non-breeding plumage they are almost brown, but add a reddish brown colour when they are in breeding plumage.

Carpet Shark washed up Carpet shark being returned to the sea I hope you have enjoyed this little insight into our varied wildlife here in the north of Australia. Windjana Gorge in 2020

Having observed the Cattle Egret in breeding plumage at the Derby Poo Ponds on June 19th we found ourselves at Windjana Gorge first thing the following morning. Western Australia remains closed to everybody from everywhere. We spent several hours at Windjana Gorge and there was a great variety in wildlife as always.

Southern Boobook near Broome

Despite the Southern Boobook being one of the more common owls in Australia they are heard more often than they are seen. We are unsure as to whether the pair of Southern Boobook are breeding or just roosting inside the hollow tree. Black-headed Pythons are only in the north of Australia. Southern Boobook.
