In case you didn’t know, yes, there is an indigenous peacock living in Africa, the Congo Peafowl. And apart from local people, primate researchers sometimes spot it, but it is a species seen by fewer than ten living birders. He has authored several other books and many articles, largely on natural history.

To the Editor: Re “ Ebola Imperils Gorilla Species in Congo Republic ” (news article, Dec. In 2003, I was in the sanctuary described in your article and collected samples from those dead animals. Historically, these diseases have been studied only when they affect human populations or domestic animals.

By a happy coincidence my Dad emailed me and told me how much he enjoyed my article last week on unpleasant viral pandemics and sent me some actually decent photos of the cave I spoke about in it that I hadn’t managed to take. This means it has different species, and adds to the biological diversity of the park. The Python Caves.

Nineteen days later we had racked up an amazing list of 436 species, including some of Africa’s least known birds such as Congo Serpent Eagle , Yellow-footed Honeyguide , Tessmann’s Flycatcher , Yellow-bearded Greenbul , Black-collared Lovebird and much besides. I returned home with very mixed feelings, which have spurred this article.
