To the Editor: Re “ Ebola Imperils Gorilla Species in Congo Republic ” (news article, Dec. Historically, these diseases have been studied only when they affect human populations or domestic animals. In 2003, I was in the sanctuary described in your article and collected samples from those dead animals.

Lots of animals have died since the beginning of the year. Dozens of animals have been killed by armed groups at Africa's oldest national park in the Democratic Republic of Congo since the start of the year, park officials and environmental groups said Tuesday. Nineteen days later we had racked up an amazing list of 436 species, including some of Africa’s least known birds such as Congo Serpent Eagle , Yellow-footed Honeyguide , Tessmann’s Flycatcher , Yellow-bearded Greenbul , Black-collared Lovebird and much besides. And wow, what a trip we had! What makes Ghana so special?
