To the Editor: Re “ Ebola Imperils Gorilla Species in Congo Republic ” (news article, Dec. In 2003, I was in the sanctuary described in your article and collected samples from those dead animals. Historically, these diseases have been studied only when they affect human populations or domestic animals.

Two of my favorite issues are chimpanzees threatened in labs and mountain gorillas threatened in the Congo. Let's combine the two and look at chimpanzees threatened in the Congo. Poachers in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) threaten the existence of the largest remaining continuous population of chimpanzees in the world.

Nineteen days later we had racked up an amazing list of 436 species, including some of Africa’s least known birds such as Congo Serpent Eagle , Yellow-footed Honeyguide , Tessmann’s Flycatcher , Yellow-bearded Greenbul , Black-collared Lovebird and much besides. And wow, what a trip we had! What makes Ghana so special?

Dozens of animals have been killed by armed groups at Africa's oldest national park in the Democratic Republic of Congo since the start of the year, park officials and environmental groups said Tuesday. In 1980, Lake Edward had a hippopotamus sanctuary with 27,000 animals. Lots of animals have died since the beginning of the year.
