Every now and the the loosing Loon would disappear like it had been killed and sunk. The adults move to flocks, there may be two or three of them, that hang out mostly far off shore in the larger part of the lake, abandoning their embayments or otherwise protected areas. Then one day they are gone.

At 15h59, the female picked up the fourth chick and killed it by repeatedly crushing it with her beak. One paper describes them breeding in a human settlement in abandoned clay jars.

The topic was the concept of humans as predators, or hunters, or really, eaters of meat, and I was discussing the many ways in which people misconceived this notion. So that was the first argument for a scavenging phase. Any buffalo bones from prior to that transition were obviously scavenged.

A parent bird’s instinct to feed and protect their young is very strong, and they will not willingly abandon their babies. Predators and storms can wreak havoc and human intervention is sometimes needed for survival. Mites will eventually kill the bird. Unfortunately a bird’s nest location is not always perfect.
