In fact, this is probably a species that has substantially expanded its original range through the pet shop route and the resulting escapees. A challenge for young birders, maybe.

Late last year we decided to meet up with my sister and her family in Western Australia and we reached an agreement that they would fly to Perth from Sydney during the school holidays in January. We were busy adding birds to the Year List as we travelled and had left home with 155 species and the number was soon increasing.

We are entering the mixed colony of 11 species ( Grey , Squacco , Purple and Black-crowned Night Herons ; Great , Little and, recently, Cattle Egrets ; Eurasian Spoonbill (below) and Glossy Ibis ; Pygmy and Great Cormorant ). I do have experience with this species from Bodrum, Turkey; it is daring, bold and cocky, and is impossible to forget.
