I visited Hong Kong from February 20-27, 2014. 133 Eurasian Tree Sparrow. Despite impressive, often rampant development, Hong Kong reserves 40% of its land as greenspace. The result is a nature lover’s paradise rich with mountains, beaches, and birds. Lots and lots of birds! 132 Yellow-billed (Chinese) Grosbeak. Great bird.

No feeder at all, in fact, no American Goldfinch , no Song Sparrows even unless I go looking for them. For some reason, this is the year that the masked butcherbirds have been around in my corners of Montana, with as many sightings for me in 2014 as in the rest of my life (including the other three years I lived in Montana) combined.

My favorite sighting was a trio of Sandhill Cranes along I-71 in Ohio, but since that didn’t occur on the weekend, I’ll go with fetching Fox Sparrows at our cousin’s Kentucky farm. Driving from Rochester, NY to Georgetown, KY this Thanksgiving weekend afforded me lots of looks at big birds like raptors.

But that bird was in Brooklyn whereas his Best Bird of the Weekend, a Henslow’s Sparrow , was his first in seven years and also his first of that species in Queens! Corey was extremely lucky this weekend to get a Cassin’s Kingbird , the second record for the species in New York State. How about you?

That is, that was it until 22 June 2014, when David Ringer found one on the west side of Manhattan. Fortunately, the Eurasian Collared-Dove has learned the bad habits of the Rock Pigeons and House Sparrows in the area and it comes in readily to crumbs. Try to tell me this bird isn’t gorgeous!

Over the next few days, I found increasing numbers, goldfinches, juncos, white-throated sparrows. A 2014 Smithsonian study concluded that collisions likely kill 365 million to 1 billion birds annually in the U.S., I was shocked when I found the first body, a female Towhee. I hoped it was an anomaly.

The Zapata Swamp, Ciénaga de Zapata , is of course known for the three birds that bear it’s name: the Zapata Rail, the Zapata Wren, and the Zapata Sparrow. Cervera on April 30th, 1927, and a recent sighting (no photographs or video) in November 2014 by ornithologist Andy Mitchell and naturalist Angel Martinez.

I was able to maintain the new structure in the 2014 list , and this was a mighty fine birding year in all aspects. House Sparrow, Passer domesticus. Eurasian Tree Sparrow, Passer montanus. Therefore, I greatly expanded the structure of my year list in 2013 to include maps, statistics and a diary. This was fun.
