I saw my first migratory Eastern Phoebe of 2019 this morning at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Over the last ten years my average first phoebe has been the 22nd of March, meaning that this year’s bird was five days earlier than average and nearly two weeks earlier than last year’s. 2012 – 15 March. 2019 – 17 March.

While at the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival I could not resist making the drive north to Daytona Beach one day to witness the awesome gull fly-in from the dump to the beach. Laughing Gulls numbering well over 10,000 in number form the bulk of the birds on the beach in Daytona Beach but this bird was weird.

Twitching is a British term used to mean “the pursuit of a previously located rare bird.” Basically, I never had the time to chase birds. My second twitch, during the winter of 2011, was also in the area of McArthur where an American Tree Sparrow ( Spizella arborea ) was spotted during a Christmas Bird Count.

I saw my first migratory Eastern Phoebe of 2017 this morning, 12 March, at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, thus kicking off spring for myself over a week early. Flooding related to Tropical Storm Lee severely damaged the two farms used for raising Ring-necked Pheasants in Pennsylvania earlier this year, limiting the number of birds that will be released for slaughter by hunters (and slaughter is exactly what shooting farm-raised birds is).
