The pair of Pied Oystercatchers have been successful in raising a chick on two occasions that we are aware of in recent years and that was in 2008 and 2011. In fact they were the only pair to successfully raise a chick in the 2008 season and only one other chick survived in 2011.

From 1993 to 2004, biologists released 289 captive-raised whooping cranes into central Florida. Though Whooping Cranes have recovered greatly since their nadir of 23 total Whooping Cranes in 1941 as of 2011 there were only about 600. That number has continued to shrink. It is no wonder that the project was discontinued.

There are sixteen pairs of Pied Oystercatchers and they have varying success at raising young birds. Last year they successfully laid three eggs and they successfully raised three chicks , which is the only record that we are aware of in the local area. The last time they successfully raised a chick was in 2012.
