Still, I have been stuck trying to identify a dragonfly I photographed in 2010. Species are arranged by family and genus along taxonomic lines, but not always in accordance with the very latest molecular DNA research. The dragonfly photo I have been puzzling over since 2010 turned out to be a Black-winged Dragonlet andromorph!

Say’s Phoebe – A self-found rarity at Edgemere while accompanied by my family made my day back on 05 October 2014. Golden Eagle – Two weeks to the day after the Say’s Phoebe I was once again at Edgemere with my family and picked up a Golden Eagle flying past , a surprise bird for sure!

In 2010, Common Ravens nested in Queens. In Manhattan, ravens were seen sporadically beginning in 2010. The family has continued hanging around Chelsea since, and it’s a lot of fun watching (and hearing!) They’ve also recently nested in the Bronx and nearby in New Jersey.

It was inaccessible from where I was so I hoofed it back to my car, drove down to the main parking lot and made great haste to the south end of the East Pond where I saw my second Black-bellied Whistling Duck for Queens, and the first since 2010! What a bird for Queens! It was an amazing morning’s birding!

There was an empty lot of land next to us until 2010 – I remember seeing a distraught Blue-black Grassquit sitting on the fence as the bulldozer cleared the land. A White-lined Tanager (above) enjoys a fallen mango, while a Blue-gray Tanager (below) prefers to get its mango fix from our porch. Birds have also benefitted.

Now we were in Finca Tres Equis, a family cocoa farm (if I understood well, it translates as Triple X Farm) and a private reserve of over 300 hectares, of which more than 70 percent is a forest, representing part of a Jaguar corridor. 2010; Macaw Recovery Network 2019). At least one Boat-billed Heron awaited us in the thickets.

It is one of three species of ani ( Groove-billed and Greater Anis are the other two) and together form a unique branch in the cuckoo family. A lone Smooth-billed Ani, dubbed the ‘Orphan Ani’ by locals, that lingered for months at Anhinga Trail in 2010.

By the beginning of September the family had decided to move north and over two nights they moved through the area on Cable Beach that is the busiest during the day. Although it would seem a risky move it was to get the family to a reef that is exposed on low tide to the north.

Claudia Hollm saw a TV show about a family who had to relinquish their dog because of economic hardship. The family simply did not have enough money to feed their beloved dog and with breaking hearts they relinquished him to a shelter where he died shortly thereafter of a broken heart after being so loved by this family for many years.
