In theory the eggs are laid, the adults share the incubation of the eggs for 28 days and then fluffy chicks emerge. There are other pairs that nest in rather obscure areas, but as soon as the eggs hatch they walk the chicks several kilometres to a better feeding area. If only it was that easy!

Spending days searching for an elusive bird you finally get to see, a bird that few others have seen, a bird about which very little is even known, and then seeing it is a tremendous and unforgettable experience. Besides the urgent need to identify my dragonflies, I was interested in hands-on experience using these field guides. The where and how of egg laying and larva emergence is briefly treated, with page references to larval drawings at the back of the book. The Behaviour paragraph includes flight pattern and mating habits.

Wild bee species are vital to agriculture and a Cornell University study concluded that “ insect pollinators contributed $29 billion to US farm income in 2010″ and are “integral to food security in the United States”(quotes from response to RFI). A book mark was very useful to make the glossary quickly accessible.

15): We are glad to see an article describing the intensive confinement of egg-laying chickens, but we disagree when it says that animal advocates and consumers are “driving big changes” in the treatment of chickens. At our farm sanctuary, we see how much chickens rescued from factory farms delight in these experiences.
