We have only encountered a Tawny Frogmouth nest once before and that was at the Broome Poo Ponds in January 2010. They breed after rain events and this was exactly the situation once again. The dam was very full and there were numerous species of birds present. Tawny Frogmouth becomes a branch! Tawny Frogmouth nest with chick.

Experiments in the field (the famed Asa Wright Nature Center veranda) involving Bananaquits and bananas came up with numbers ranging from 7 to 16, but a tanager always came along to interfere with Bananaquits’ noisy appreciation of their namesake fruit. Even during the breeding season the birds appear to be quite unwary of humans.

The very first thing we notice about this large member of the Galliformes is that there is a wild version and a domestic version, and although the two are rather different, they are both given the same species name, Meleagris gallopavo. This is not entirely unknown among domestic animals, but many domesticates have no living wild version.

July in New York City is generally an unpleasant experience. The mosquitoes and other biting insects often make natural areas almost unbearable, the heat keeps many breeding songbirds from singing much, and migration doesn’t happen much at all except for southbound shorebirds. It was a heart-pounding scene straight out of Jurassic Park, an odd experience for a laid-back pursuit like birding. However, he went far afield to find a more familiar fowl.
