Twenty two species are distributed among six genera, depending on what happens to be extinct, and for the most part one grebe is like another. This makes Grebes vulnerable to climate change and the predation of invasive species. It is easy to see how Minks set lose in a welcoming habitat could eat an entire species.

In 2000, around 1,000 breeding pairs were known, but by 2009, the number had plummeted to just 120-220 pairs, a decline of 88%. During that time, adult survival appeared unchanged and breeding success was reasonable, but the recruitment of young birds back into the adult population was zero in all but one of the years studied.

The mosquitoes and other biting insects often make natural areas almost unbearable, the heat keeps many breeding songbirds from singing much, and migration doesn’t happen much at all except for southbound shorebirds. An associated issue is that the Belize and Costa Rica guides share many of the same descriptions of species, written by Howell. Similarly, descriptions of species repeated across volumes do not lose their accuracy with each publication. Other species are splits and lumped and have had their names changed. Why are these issues?

We observed both the Oriental and Australian Pratincole on New Year’s Day in Broome, but the situation was not ideal for photographing both species. Both species are well camouflaged in the native grasslands of the north and they fly in a similar style to terns or swallows as they swoop for insects. Oriental Pratincole.

Queens, New York, May 2010 At one time there was an airport in northern Queens called Flushing Airport. The early successional woodland and marsh both have Tree , Barn , and Northern Rough-winged Swallows and Chimney Swifts hunting for bugs over them and the aforementioned breeding birds are in evidence everywhere.

Though barely 20 acres, the park serves as permanent, breeding, or migratory habitat for nearly 200 birds species, as well as Osprey nests and a Great Blue Heron rookery. I saw my first Loggerhead Shrike in Florida, and it is definitely one of the most interesting species I have ever seen.
