The first reintroductions took place in 2003, and in 2008 some of the released birds started to nest on a cliff just outside the town of Vejar de la Frontera, where I’ve been lucky enough to see them, and where most of the photographs accompanying this piece were taken (in April 2019 and February 2024). Here they were easy to overlook.

Whooping Crane at Joe Overstreet Road

As of 2008 only 31 of the 289 cranes released into central Florida were still alive. One of the remaining birds is known to frequent Joe Overstreet Road, a dirt road that runs a few miles through sod farms and cattle pastures between Canoe Creek Road and Lake Kissimmee in Keenansville,about an hour south of Orlando. He likes it there.

Agriculture Fears Possible "Cow Tax"
