A federal judge on Thursday upheld a 2008 decision to protect polar bears throughout their range as a “threatened” species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. The listing was the result of a 2005 petition and litigation filed by the Center for Biological Diversity, Natural Resources Defense Council and Greenpeace.

The second is to get an accurate account of species recorded, numbers of individuals seen, and effort exerted to record those birds. If I accomplish both of those goals and the weather cooperates then the count should do well.

This species was discovered (shot, actually) in the 19th century, only to be lost through the entire 20th century. The Forest Owlet is an endemic species of this mountain range. Since its rediscovery in 1997, this species has been found at a number of new locations, several of which appear to hold significant populations.

Species searches on eBird reveal that both species might be found in Tokyo, though White’s is much more common, with a few contemporary sightings. So I resorted to the internet. The brilliant orange coloration and rich, haunting song of the Spot-breasted Oriole ( Icterus pectoralis ) makes this species one of my favorite permanent residents in southeastern Florida, even though it is an introduced exotic. How can an introduced species be a favorite among birders? Don’t they compete with native birds?

The last time we had a Banded Lapwing Vanellus tricolor visit was 25th February 2008 and prior to that was 23rd September 2005. The yellow wattles are larger as well, but there are hybrids between the two species with varying amounts of black plumage. We have a rare visitor in Broome at the moment, which is rather nice!

Here are some things I’ve learned from the Peterson Reference Guide to Owls of North America and the Caribbean by Scott Weidensaul: The Burrowing Owl is the only North American owl species where the male is larger than the female, albeit, only slightly larger. The 39 owls include five endemic Caribbean species.

BNA says that both species share a passion for brine flies, and tend to share habitat. Adult Black-necked Stilts have a tinge of pink on the breast, and juveniles have pink-based bills. Like good fashionistas, they carry their signature color throughout the outfit. Black-necked Stilts tend to feed with American Avocets.
