Listed as Near Threatened, this charismatic species has a tiny distribution restricted to central Costa Rica, especially in the Central Valley. Over a few years, I have already seen several places where I watched this species, even showed this species to visiting birders, bulldozed and prepared for housing. Check out the video!

Some 320 species have been recorded here, and in springtime it is possible to observe more than 150 bird species in a week. Although the trains at the Thessaloniki-Alexandroupolis line seem to be few and far in between, they still stop at this village station turned into a restaurant. The lake lies at a mere 35 m / 115 ft a.s.l.

I chose the name Malimbe Tours because the first bird I ever set eyes on through a pair of binoculars was one of our dazzling malimbe species. I have trained young guides and have also discovered new and important birding sites that are now actively enjoyed by birders from all over the world. It was a fantastic experience.

If I lived in another hemisphere, I might be talking about the Common Redstart or other chat species with a flash of red in the tail. In Costa Rica, we have a couple resident redstart species (that actually show white in the tail) but I can see them on any visit to montane habitats. It’s also used by migrant species.

We saw dozens of small, brown birds hopping in and out of the vegetation like Sickle-winged Chat , Mountain Pipit , various lark species, a Southern Bald Ibis that only a mother could love, and fewer raptors like Bearded Vultures and Cape Griffon.

Mid-May to Mid-Jun is the best time to see some of the most exciting species here, as this is the prime breeding time. For another species, the Firethroat , it meant I only got acceptable views rather than the really good ones reportedly possible a few weeks earlier. A juvenile. The Snow Pigeons here are quite shy.

The ibises were initially trained to follow a microlight aircraft over the Alps. In 2018, there were 1,745 birds living in 92 different zoos and collections.

The African Pygmy Goose to me looks a bit like an annoying teenager on a subway train who wants to highlight the fact that he wears enormous earphones. The White-eared Barbet is another bird species with an annoyingly sensible Latin species name, leucotis (white-eared). But the same species was never found again.

For once, eBird gives a good description of the Asian Glossy Starling, calling it a “Fierce-looking, large songbird” As are humans, this species is fairly urbanized – it “sometimes enters urban areas to roost, e.g. in Singapore” (HBW). “Odd, me?”

My target bird was found within about 30 minutes of aimless meandering from the train station which is located conveniently at the park. Three further hours of tramping through the rain and the cold brought 36 more species for my day trip and the decision was made that enough was enough. Success was almost immediate.

Immediately I began looking for new species, spotting right away a dark, crow-like bird with a grey mantle and belly. I couldn’t help but connect them with mob bosses of the city, watching over and taking food from all of the other bird species throughout the city. We ran for it and just barely caught the train.

Other species I was looking forward to as possibilities included Anhingas , Magnificent Frigatebirds , and seeing as the sun was supposed to shine, some raptors soaring. Not only that, but we had a train ride to look forward to! The train is tiny, open, narrow-gauge, and only two cars long, but a fun ride nonetheless.

It is very easy to reach Olympic Park by public transport and the fastest way is to take a train from Central Station to Lidcombe and then you take a train to Olympic Park. We came to the conclusion that the small loop line that takes you to Olympic Park from Lidcombe is where “old trains go to die”!!

As you can see, Willow Lake is bounded to the west by the Grand Central Parkway, to the east by the Van Wyck Expressway, to the south by the city transit authority’s train yard, and to the north by Jewel Avenue.
