The latest edition of Bull’s Birds of New York State , the classic book on NYS bird status and distribution, came out in 1998, so the numbers and trends given here represent a 16 to 18 year jump in currency. This is a project that clearly spanned decades. Another big year memoir? I love reading all of the above.

My impression is that most young birders are eBirders, a trend that will surely continue due to its convenience, accessibility, and contribution to science. (The 10,000 Birds collaborative list is maintained exclusively on eBird, for example.) Also, it is free and easy to use and continues to introduce impressive new functionality.

With the trend of increasing numbers of wildlife enthusiasts and decreasing numbers of hunters , the National Wildlife Refuge System needs the support of more non-hunters. Our National Wildlife Refuges need our help to remain a viable entity promoting wildlife conservation.

And even when I did try, my counts came up significantly lower than the science people’s count. I’m hoping it may become a trend. I also learned some lessons from birding with all these biologists: Biologists are way better at counting large numbers of creatures than I am. I’m a big fan of Snipes.
