Public transport from that part of town went nowhere near anywhere I wanted to be, so I slept in and took a mid-morning stroll around the neighbourhood. A pair of nesting Downy Woodpeckers were the highlight of the walk and I wanted to share them with you.

We were then able to walk down Upper Thomson Road and get public transport back to our hotel. We had not been expecting to see a Banded Woodpecker and there we had one right in front of us. It was clear from the tree trunk that the Banded Woodpecker most likely stopped by this tree on a regular basis to look for food.

Common Gallinules camouflaged with the denser vegetation, and we were now so close to the woods that we heard Red-bellied Woodpeckers and Common Yellowthroats. We could have continued along the paddle trail, but I’m still building my kayaking muscles and didn’t want to overdo it right out of the gate.

Additional helpful design features include the names of family groups against a yellow-and-white striped background on every page corner and having every bird image facing right (except for that Common Loon chick!), I found the latter, printed on one page and easily accessed on the inside back cover, particularly useful.

If you happen to find yourself in Melbourne then there are also plenty of places to go birding in the city itself or not far by public transport. Herdsman Lake is easily accessible by public transport, but when we have visited by vehicle we have gone further afield to Yanchep National Park and the Perth Hills. Australian Shelducks.

Beljarica floodplain, from the Danube at the left to the embankment at the right hand side. Other species of special significance are herons and egrets (this is very important foraging area), Ferruginous Duck, as well as Lesser Spotted and European Green Woodpeckers , Spotted Flycatcher and the Icterine Warbler.

Taxi v SMRT – The SMRT is the excellent, clean, safe, reliable, cheap transport system of Singapore. The path along the right (east) bank of the river leads along a cycle path with Asian Koels , Yellow-vented Bulbuls , Laced Woodpeckers and Oriental Magpie Robins all likely. You may also find familiar faces.
