The only harassment came from the resident Red-tailed Squirrel family – which seemed to be more curiosity than anything else, as their nest was just about two feet away. Hopefully they found a suitable place nearby to raise the next generation! Both species seemed content to observe each other though.

Our Audubon Chapter Campout at Lassen Volcanic National Park

Near Summit Lake we have been able to witness Williamson’s Sapsuckers ( Sphyrapicus thyroideus ) raising their young in a snag near the campground. American Coots ( Fulica americana ) raise their young at the park also. And Red-breasted Sapsuckers (Sphyrapicus ruber) are common. She is in a snag, at least forty feet up!

How To Help A Baby Bird

You typically do not find a bird this naked or featherless outside of the nest unless there has been a storm or the nest has been attacked by predator like a raccoon, chipmunk, squirrel or corvids. If you cannot find the nest or it’s too destroyed, do not try and raise a chick this young. That is probably one of the adults.

This summer Lisa raised three orphaned Common Ravens. They were not aware of wildlife laws, and thought they could raise and release them. We decided to raise them, and hoped they would wild up quickly if we followed the protocol for avoiding imprinting. A few weeks ago squirrel was hit by a car in front of my house.

Over the last two weeks, we raised our faces and sniffed. Later on — after seven years at most, in the case of the Black-backed Woodpecker — these first responders are gone and the holes in the snags serve as nesting cavities for martens, and squirrels and Mountain Bluebirds and Flammulated Owls.
