He pointed out the differences in the day’s five gull species, all of which flew fairly close to the bluff from which we watched. All Brandt’s The same goes for the three species of loons flying by. Frankly, I leaned a lot on Peter for the ID of the first two species. and my first member of the auk/puffin family.

Calling All Birders: Come To Hog Island!

Soon after our late afternoon arrival we met up with my friend Pete Salmonsohn, Education Coordinator for Audubon’s Project Puffin , who hustled us into a van for a 20-minute drive to New Harbor. We want all birds to be bursting with health, and we revel in our rare idle moments.

Birding the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve in Newfoundland

The inscrutable species frustrated me and I found myself especially stumped by the difficulty I had distinguishing them, and wildly mystified by the excitement they inspired in my fellow-birders. We didn’t even need binoculars to enjoy the puffins – they were close enough to be marveled at naked-eye! Happy puffins.

Slow Start to Spring

Even in the north of the country we can expect three or four species to arrive by the end of the month, generally Sandwich Tern, Northern Wheatear, Sand Martins and the first singing Chiffchaffs. Others weren’t so lucky with a few tide-line corpses found of species such as Long-eared Owl. Along with these were many Guillemots.
