Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. So you can imagine our disappointment when we crawled out of the car after our trip to find out that Mike was in fact relaxing in the warm kitchen and had no idea where the woodpecker was! Why is that awesome?

There are very few reports from sites further afield although with all public and most private parks closed, a birder can’t go to such official protected areas anyways. Even second growth could reward yard birders with beauties like White-collared Manakin , Golden-hooded Tanager , and the smart looking Black-cheeked Woodpecker.

Plop in the middle of the sparrow section I found the Sparrow Nest Quick-Look Chart, a 2-page spread listing sparrow species and columns for nest placement, habitat, and unmarked eggs (an identification characteristic). To be fair, the Sparrow Chart is cited in the sparrow family group write-up, but it could be easily missed.).

In two months they will depart for valleys, leaving the bare branches bare of birds, too – apart from woodpeckers – but for now they are in the forest.
