It took me awhile, but I managed to get on quite a few, especially when the boat slowed down to go check out some Humpback Whales and a huge number of Common Dolphins. Sooty Shearwaters and a Western Gull fly back the aftermath of a Humpback Whale breaching. Humpback Whale Megaptera novaeangliae. It was amazing.

I’ve been on a whale-watching trip in Orange County , twice gone out to Santa Cruz Island , and even visited Protection Island off the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. Brown Pelicans cared not for my taint. Hordes of Brown Pelicans , Heermann’s Gulls , and Western Gulls made it clear we were on the west coast.

If you choose to consider 1944 the year, most people were a little busy right then. And we did , for the Peregrine Falcon and Osprey , the Brown Pelican and Bald Eagle. And oh crap, you guys, we really have to do something about the California Condor situation right now, but what? We could do it! Then the 80s happened.

Right next to the world famous Opera House is the the Sydney Botanical Gardens, a good place to see Sulphur-crested Cockatoos , Banded Rails and large roosting groups of Grey-headed Flying-foxes. And it is certainly possible to see others with luck and a trip to the right spot. The city is a very green one.

Brown Pelican Lapland Longspur Sooty Shearwater Whimbrel. Cory’s Shearwater – 06 Oct 2013 – Going on a whale-watching trip with my family really paid off. Somehow, I am just never in the right place at the right time. Number 300 in Queens!

Furthermore we have another very special stork-like bird, the regal Shoebill , previously known as the Whale-headed Stork but now placed in its own family. During the intervening years it has spread right down to the far south of the province as well as inland, with hundreds of breeding pairs now in KwaZulu-Natal province.

As a proof, two Dalmatian Pelicans are flying low above us, while a Bluethroat disappears into the nearby bush. Asia: Somewhere below that mysterious eagle, at the far shore of the lake, lies one Bengal Tiger … and further to the right – two more! The Sun is just rising. Should we expect the scarecrow to be a bad omen?
