Long-toed Lapwing , Ashy Tit , Black-backed Cisticola , Lizard Buzzard , Meyer’s Parrot and Southern Black Tit were just some of my rewards (these were my lifers that day). I ended up scoring four lifers: African Dusky Flycatcher , Village Weaver , Whyte Barbet and Zebra Waxbill. It’s such a great place for birds.

“The slender-billed cockatoo ( long – billed corella ) is a very affectionate, easy-going pet bird and one of the best talking parrots” ( source ). Is it offensive to say that Australian Zebra Finches breed like rabbits? Talk about schizophrenia. I guess we have to be thankful they do not also wear leggings.

The edges of the pool were active with Black-fronted Dotterels , Red-kneed Dotterels , Magpie-larks and Zebra Finch coming down to drink. Mulga Parrots and Ring-necked Parrots. Mulga Parrots. Our close encounter with two pairs of Ring-necked Parrots was interesting, because two birds were fighting and two were observing.

About halfway between Marymount Road and Upper Thomson Road we had the pleasure of sitting and observing Blue-crowned Hanging Parrots. Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot. We were surprised that it had taken until this day to find Coconut Lorikeets. In fact it was not a bird at all, but a Common Gliding Lizard.

In this study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a group of juvenile zebra finches was allowed to interact with an adult. Adult zebra finches change their vocalizations when singing to juveniles. Another group simply heard adult songs played through a speaker.

Sitting quietly in the shade of the large trees you soon observe some of the quieter birds in the area and they included White-plumed Honeyeaters , Spiny-cheeked Honeyeaters , Zebra Finch , Willie Wagtails , Diamond Doves , Crested Pigeons , Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes , White-winged Trillers , Sacred Kingfishers and Rainbow Bee-eaters.

There were 12 Red-necked Avocet feeding in the ponds and along the fenceline there were Zebra Finch, Peaceful Doves and Diamond Doves nipping back and forth for water. The smallest pools of water were sustaining numerous finches including Crimson Finch, Long-tailed Finch, Double-barred Finch and Zebra Finch. Black-necked Stork.

Crested Pigeons and Diamond Doves flew across the track in search of water and there were also Zebra Finch and Long-tailed Finch. Red-winged Parrots are often camouflaged until they fly across the track and there were several pairs along the track. Two distant Pied Honeyeaters.

There were small groups of Double-barred Finches, Zebra Finch and also Crimson Finches. We had White-bellied Cuckoo-shrikes and Grey Fantails in the trees and overhead we observed Brown Falcons, Black Kites, Red-tailed Black Cockatoos, Blue-winged Kookaburras, Red-winged Parrots and Cockatiels. The native bushes were full of Zebra Finch, Long-tailed Finch and Double-barred Finch waiting to nip to the water when they felt safe to do so. A White-necked Heron was quite well hidden in the taller reeds and several Brolga wandered in to get a drink. Our bush camp was far from quiet, but we know that Australian birds are not quiet species!
