Spotting My First Horned Owl in Veteran’s Park

I think everyone can readily admit that owls are cool. Yet, these very qualities are what make them so difficult to see as birders, and in my years of birding I had managed to spot just two: the Snowy Owl (which is active during the daytime) and the Barred Owl. One particular family of owls had particularly evaded me.

Woodland for sale

The existing villagers joined with the newcomers organizing a whip-round to raise money in the hope of buying it. The real upside is that it is right by my house and the Tawny Owls occasionally stray into my oak tree at night. Anti-social behaviour has degraded the ambience of the wood in the past. Feeder stations!

An afternoon in the Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa

They raise their trunks, sniffing the air. The two dogs walk right next to our rover and disappear in the dark. Barn Owl on a dry tree trunk and a… traffic jam! Nowadays, the Savannah Elephants are shorter and with smaller tusks, often without them. Sniffing us. A flock of Red-billed Oxpeckers is flying above.
