There were ten students in total that had signed up for the spring break “Seabirds” course in Dry Tortugas National Park, and after long drives down from North Carolina we had all made it right on time. Sooty Terns, with their jet black heads and bills, have been the subject of one of the longest continuous bird studies in the world.

It looks like the illustrations were created with colored chalk on sandpaper, a terrific idea that didn’t occur to me till I noticed that the authors thank a woodworking shop in North Carolina for “quality sandpaper for the illustrations” I wish they had provided more information about this aspect of the book’s creation.

Tundra Swan, Cygnus columbianus, photographed above by Ken Behrens, flies nonstop from staging areas in North Dakota to Chesapeake Bay and eastern North Carolina, a fact indicated by both arrows and text. This makes researching a species much more time consuming than it should be. Some maps are quite busy.
