Why Do Animals Exist?
They also tried to tell me that veganism is no better because of all the animals that are killed in the process of harvesting vegetables and grains. Let’s walk through this: yes, small animals and insects are killed in modern agriculture in the planting and harvesting of various crops. 8220;To eat zebras , they replied.

On SPECIESISM, by Joan Dunayer
Whenever the media report that someone has killed "an endangered animal" or "an endangered species," they too confuse an individual with a species. Hunters kill members of endangered species. residents believe that it's wrong to kill animals for their pelts, but the pelt industry is legal. To be consistent (and nonspeciesist).

On ANIMAL EQUALITY, by Joan Dunayer
Minus that role, the term implies, such an animal has no place; if they aren't some human's companion, or their companionship fails to please, they can be abandoned or killed" (8). Often it permanently disables or kills. By pairing humane with slaughter , legislators have sanctioned horrific cruelty and mass murder. Perhaps.

On a New Level of Absurdity in the Slaughter Business
And the absurdity is in the reality that the author and the featured person who kills sentient nonhumans for a living, think they're onto something. While plenty of people pay attention to the question of what it means to raise an animal humanely, far fewer stop to consider the notion—and the ostensible paradox—of humane slaughter."

Study Claims Islamic Slaughtering More Humane
I came across this strange article about German research on which slaughter method creates more pain for the animal: the Western method of stunning or the Islamic method of a cut to the neck. According to the researchers, the Islamic method wins. You can read all about the results in the article. What an utterly grotesque project.

Henry S. Salt (1851-1939) on "Humane Slaughter"
The plea that animals might be killed painlessly is a very common one with flesh-eaters, but it must be pointed out that what-might-be can afford no exemption from moral responsibility for what-is. Henry S. Salt , The Logic of Vegetarianism: Essays and Dialogues [London: The Ideal Publishing Union, 1899], 51-2 [italics in original

On Thanking Slaughtered Sheep for Book Awards
Well, she apparently did such a great job convincing the folks at the Minnesota Book Awards that you can claim to love animals and then send them to slaughter, that not only was she a finalist for their award, but she won it. You won't be part of a kill and disassembly line but you will be killed, one at a time" (159).

The Egyptian government has begun slaughtering all of the pigs in the country. From the NY Times: Egypt has begun forcibly slaughtering the country’s pig herds as a precaution against swine flu, a move that the United Nations described as “a real mistake” and one that is prompting anger among the country’s pig farmers.

On the Renewed Debate Over Horse Slaughter
The problem is that people are abandoning and neglecting horses, and to address that problem--to address the problem that people abandon horses--we'll kill the horses? Not approving the institutionalized slaughter of the horses we claim to hold so dear lowers that value. Do we recommend killing those children? Financially).

On The Respectful Emperor
When I think about the language that has been used by people who kill animals or have someone else do it for them, a couple of years ago the "compassionate" trend began. Maybe "humane" is already on its way out for the folks trying to convince themselves and others that humane killing isn't an oxymoron. People are talking. And acting.
