My favorite sighting was a trio of Sandhill Cranes along I-71 in Ohio, but since that didn’t occur on the weekend, I’ll go with fetching Fox Sparrows at our cousin’s Kentucky farm. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was one that most New York City dwellers appreciate whenever they see one upstate.

This year it was an American Crow ( Corvus brachyrhyncus ), though at home in Albany, New York, it’s just as likely to be – and has been in the past – a Fish Crow ( Corvus ossifragus ). Crow, a Scottish chemist-physician who settled in Frankfort, Kentucky in the 1820s. It’s all very inevitable, really.

The crow in the photograph above is unreleasable and lives at Teatown Lake Reservation in New York. Eileen Wicker of Raptor Rehabilitation of Kentucky has an unreleasable Turkey Vulture who has a thing for hats. Crows, who are probably the most larcenous birds on earth, make off with anything they can get their beaks on.

It is my belief that the birds were migrating, though one New York birder suggested that they might have been flying out for some crepuscular feeding. Either way, it was a heck of a sight and another example of why Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is the best place in New York City to see amazing wildlife spectacles.

Barbaro, the magnificent thoroughbred who broke his leg two weeks after winning the 2006 Kentucky Derby (I watched both races live), was put to death after taking a turn for the worse in his recovery. See here for the New York Times story. It's a sad day for horse lovers. Barbaro's killing is a case of euthanasia.
