Great Gray Owl: Seeing the Ghost

10,000 Birds

There are birds more prized by North American birders than the Great Gray Owl , but not many*. Like many cold-weather creatures, the Great Gray Owl can to some extent trade altitude for latitude. Not only did they, but they invited us to tag along with them. The owl wasn’t there. We went beyond.

My Year so Far – Modest but Satisfactory

10,000 Birds

A typical view of a Woodcock – high over the woods The heath where I saw the roding Woodcock is a regular site for Long-eared Owls. There was a chance I might find one when looking for the Woodcock, but I didn’t have any luck, and the only owl I recorded was a hooting Tawny. Always a good bird to see: a Short-eared Owl.

Decoy: Cabernet Sauvignon (2016)

10,000 Birds

I’ll admit to being momentarily faked out by the plastic owls that people put out in a futile attempt to ward off crows, which demonstrates that decoys work on birders, if not on birds themselves. Decoy wines are notable in being made to enjoy upon release, along with a modest price tag that belies the good quality of these young vintages.

The Nonessential Whooping Crane

10,000 Birds

With the proposed hunting seasons on sandhill cranes being discussed in Tennessee, Kentucky and Wisconsin, we must not forget the whooping crane, which travels and winters in the big sandhill crane flocks. More states will doubtless join the queue of those proposing hunts. Another thing to consider. Now, it’s time to go to the top.
