Who can resist penguins and whales? The book notes that most of South Georgia’s birds are either Penguins, Sphenisciformes, or Tubenoses, Procellariiformes. And, much as I love Albatrosses and am curious about Prions, it is the pages on Penguins that I keep turning to. I know, I say this with every review.

Finally in 1799, the first visitors on this volcanic land were a group of French seal hunters who were after the fur seals that can be found hauled out on the beaches for fur and oil, which almost wiped out the local population of the species. Southern Rockhopper Penguin. Marion has a fascinating history with invasive species.

Another great birding adventure book is The Jewel Hunter by Chris Gooddie (Princeton Univ. I think of The Jewel Hunter often when I travel to foreign countries, wishing I could do it like Goodie did. Everyone also loves penguins, which makes Penguins: The Ultimate Guide (Princeton Univ. Press, 2012).

Winged Migration , March of the Penguins , and Pale Male each made money for the producers. Even though we spend more money and are far more numerous than hunters this is not commonly understood. The more money this film generates the better for birds and conservation in every way. “Hold it,” you stammer.

Jean Loscalzo is a penguin buff (Can you blame her?) and would love to watch Rockhopper Penguins. My Brazilian wish bird would be Rockhopper Penguin: raucous, feisty birds with really cool haircuts, a sort of disheveled yellow-black shaggy look that they wear well.
