The strategy of this pair of Pied Oystercatchers is to lay their eggs in a dune area which is amongst the busiest area for vehicles on the beach. We have observed Pied Oystercatcher parents chase of White-bellied Sea-Eagles and unfortunately there are feral cats and feral foxes have become more prevalent too.

Although I love dogs they're too dependent on humans, it's true that stray/feral dogs can form packs and survive in the wild a regular dog like a golden retriever would get eaten by a lion instantly. The main strategy for horses is organisation. In my opinion dogs would be the first to go. Cats would be the next.

We have to understand, though, that this was a natural predator and not one of our introduced feral cats or foxes. They use this strategy each year and food is a lot more accessible there and there are plenty of places for a Pied Oystercatcher chick to hide until it can fly. The moist Pied Oystercatcher nest site after the thieving.

The main problem appears to be feral cats, but there is also predation from birds of prey and the parent Pied Oystercatchers do their utmost to protect their young. This particular pair of Pied Oystercatchers have a strategy that involves walking their young two kilometres to the reef at Gantheaume Point when they are only a few days old.

Sadly a lot of eggs are lost to feral cats and chicks are sometimes taken by birds of prey. These parents have a strategy where they nest away from the reef and then walk the chicks the 2 kilometres there within a few days of hatching. We had one pair attempt 5 times in 2009, so they don’t give up easily!

From the retired to school students Kiwis [the people] were shown planting trees, checking feral animal traps and explaining enthusiastically the reasons for their participation.
