We all have them: our favorite places to take friends and family when they visit, the bird-friendly areas we pop in on when we have the chance, the landscapes that entrance us. Both Black and Turkey Vultures swooped overhead, occasionally upstaged by a shrieking Osprey. Moving means finding your new birding haunts.

The upside of rehabbing Turkey Vultures is they’re smart, funny, cool, fascinating birds. She made the 10 or 14 calls it usually takes to find a wildlife rehabilitator, finally finding me. Anhinga , otherwise known as Snakebird , Water Turkey , or American Darter * – and more formally as Anhinga anhinga – is a bird I have long wanted to see in New York State. The other nickname, Snakebird , refer to its long neck but, honestly, I am not sure why it would ever be called a Water Turkey.

He is the author of an internationally distributed book in Spanish about family finances and has recorded four albums in Spanish of his own songs. Wildlife photography, of course, was out of reach for us mere mortals, before the advent of digital cameras. This is Paul’s first post for 10,000 Birds. But it’s the best one I have.

This is the third year that my family and some our close friends did a vacation together. We got off the ferry and, seeing as we only had about half-an-hour to drive before we were at our hotel, we decided to explore a bit at Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge. Two years ago it was Culebra, Puerto Rico.

However, as with many other places throughout the globe, this small country also has its fair share of urban wildlife. But, they still occur, the most common species being Black Vulture , Turkey Vulture , Gray Hawk , Short-tailed Hawk , and Yellow-headed and Crested Caracaras. Lots of birds, a lot of really cool birds! Blackbirds.
