I've officially been blogging for four years (1,329 posts and 5,441 comments) today, and as I (re)ponder whether I will continue, I'd like to present some lessons I've learned about blogging, veganism, people, "the movement," language and. Lesson #6 Vegans have a bad reputation. I want people to see my family as "normal."

I say "if you know someone" because this isn't a book I'd recommend to vegans for their vegan education efforts. The vegans I know would probably find it a bit maddening, and here's why: We aren't sure whether Foer is a vegan. He is against it for himself and his family. Not great, but good. He never says he is.

On Friday, June 25, I received a call from an attorney who said a little girl was born the evening prior, her adoption fell through and she needed a family. Because we planned to adopt I had been researching eco-friendly, vegan nursery items but had yet to purchase a thing. And on Sunday, June 27, we brought her home!

There's no remotely vegan or even vegetarian (though I'm not even sure what the latter would look like) message. They grill the chickens, and trust me when I say it's all presented as a peak spiritual experience. We eat animals, and the CAFO system is an evil, filthy, cruel one, but it doesn't have to be that way.

Spend more time with family and friends—I will do X in the evening with my spouse or partner, and I will do Y with my kids on the weekend (where you and your family and friends fill in the variables appropriately).

He was adopted by the Masson family and was apparently the most loving dog all who met him had ever had the pleasure of being licked by. My experience says otherwise (particularly with my childhood kitty, Brady), but generally speaking Masson's depiction of cats is accurate. Yes, there's a vegan message.

Lose weight. Quit smoking. Exercise more. Eat right. Drink less alcohol.

So, we are given the "cull the herd for its own good" defense, or the "cull the herd to prevent automobile accidents" defense, or the "I hunt to put food on my family's table" defense.
