Not only do we see dramatic changes in both light and weather during the last weeks of the year, but our schedules also experience substantial imbalances of work, play, and rest. I love sparrows, so seeing a feather-worn Vesper Sparrow this past July filled my heart with joy. I wanted to see prairie birds and I wanted to experience a new state. We saw sparrows–a total of 14 species–and we saw many other great prairie birds, and we often saw them perched on posts.

Corey joined our 10,000 Birds Beat Writer Carrie on a twitch upstate to see a Golden-crowned Sparrow , a new state bird for both of them. While the giant flock of Evening Grosbeaks they found later in the day was impressive, they weren’t impressive enough to overcome the sparrow’s status as Best Bird of the Weekend.

In between ice storms, I visited Brighton’s Brickyard Trail, a nice little walk that can be excellent for sparrows. What do you know, I spotted my FOY Swamp Sparrow in song, along with about a hundred Song Sparrows , also in song. Migrants are on the move, if you can bear to be out looking for them!

Backlighting showed off the rusty crown of this Rusty-crowned Ground-Sparrow. Oddly enough, it is the Western Bluebird that bears the taxonomic name of Sialia mexicana ; but in my experience, the Eastern Bluebird ( Sialia sialia ) is much more common in most of Mexico. The Hepatic Tanager is perhaps our most common resident tanager.

Nelson’s Sparrows are only reliably found in Queens in mid-to-late October, when they migrate south: they are usually found in saltmarshes. My first experiments involved rooting cuttings of several of Michoacán’s dozens of Salvia species. I have seen some two dozen bird species feeding on this tree: thrushes, finches and siskins, sparrows, thrashers, becards and tityras, chachalacas, vireos, tanagers, buntings, even several warblers and tyrant flycatchers.

Indeed, even though I just celebrated 40 years of living in Mexico, we have never been to Cabo San Lucas, and our only experience with Cancún was going though immigration in that city’s airport. Two Olive Sparrows , endemic to Mexico’s coasts, foraged in the shady brush.

But my experience suggests there is a fair amount of geographical overlap between the two ranges in my area. Its insect-like buzz reminds me most of the Grasshopper’s Sparrow’s song. Yellow Warblers are altitudinal migrants within the state of Michoacán, wintering in the lowlands and summering in the highlands.
