In 1806, Lewis and Clark saw condors near the Columbia River, which makes up much of the Washington-Oregon border. One management tool used by FWS is reintroduction of an endangered species into its former range. But that does not necessarily mean there are no protections. Here's the whole story from the Washington Post National. Washington wildlife officials say eight sea lions have been found dead in the Puget Sound region in recent weeks — all apparently shot. KING says one of the Nisqually casualties was a Steller sea lion, protected under the Endangered Species Act.

The Cuban Sandhill Crane , Grus canadensis nesiotes and the Mississippi Sandhill Crane , Grus canadensis pulla are listed as endangered species. “You don’t want them to go extinct, so we want to protect them. Sandhill Cranes fly south for the winter and in their wintering areas they form flocks of over 10,000 birds.

The lawsuit was filed in federal district court in Washington, D.C. A handful of endangered species have been observed at the refuge (or in the vicinity) as well. The Air Force did consult with FWS pursuant to the Endangered Species Act and FWS ultimately did assess the project. And they want their attorneys fees.
