Starting the New Year by trying to see as many species as possible is something of a birding tradition. One of my more memorable New Year’s days was in the Falkland Islands, back in 1989. My diary notes that the New Year dawned grey and windy, but I rose early, walked six miles before breakfast and noted a modest 26 species of birds. Like many offshore archipelagos, birds are few in variety on the Falklands, though many individual species are great in numbers.

People in North America began using the term “right whale” in the early 1700s, and originally “right” may have meant “typical,” as these whales were considered common and ordinary. However, over time, the term evolved to refer to how they were hunted—they were considered “the right whales to hunt.” Before whaling began, estimates suggest there were 9,000 to 21,000 North Atlantic right whales.

Dr. Charles Lemme was elected chair of the AVMA Board of Directors this past July during AVMA Convention 2023 in Denver. About halfway through his term, he spoke with AVMA News about the Association’s grassroots opposition to a “well-funded” campaign to redefine the veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR). He also shared other areas of AVMA engagement, including federal advocacy and support for technological advances.

Hannah Buschert started birding in college thanks to a required Biology of Birds course and a professor who included Sir David Attenborough’s Life of Birds to punctuate lessons. Almost as if by accident, Hannah landed the dream job of Park Ranger in the Rio Grande Valley at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park where she guided many birders who filled her head with far-off destinations and incredible birds.

Sometimes marketing people wake up sweating, mostly after having nightmares about outdated logos and designs. While I am not a marketing person myself, even I got a slightly queasy feeling when looking closely at the old 10,000 Birds logo. Somehow, it appears to have been created in the times when computer monitors still had blinking yellow letters in front of a black background, and mobile phones still were the size of bricks.

Bird Day is a lovely, little jewel of a book. The idea is to portray one bird for each hour of the day in words and art, presenting the diversity, beauty, and wonder of avian life. The partnership of its creators, ornithologist Mark E. Hauber and artist Tony Angell fulfills this goal beautifully and was the factor that motivated me to review this book.

I've wondered before if animals can understand human speech at least to the point of knowing that it is a meaningful form of communication and there are plenty of answers to that online. But now i'm wondering if animals understand that human writing contains meaning/is a form of communication? Even if they don't know what it means of course, are they still able to recognize consistent symbols and know that it means something to US. maybe if they've seen humans create them?

When I was driving to work this morning, I saw a squirrel get clipped by the wheel of a cop’s motorcycle (the cop was speeding). The poor squirrel somersaulted from the impact before managing to cross the street and run up a tree. Will the poor little guy be okay?

I love my backyard critters. I've known all of them for years. There's the black and gray/brown squirrels. Then this year, something new appeared: a squirrel that's pitch black on the lower half of their body and a VIBRANT orange-red on top. It really, really sticks out. And I can't find a picture on Google of a squirrel like this. If it's a winter pelt, I've never noticed one like it in all the years living here.

Racoons actually seem moderately clean. I've read they groom and bathe themselves and that they wash their food before eating, so they do seem moderately clean. And honestly, i think it'd be so funny for there to be some posh billionare who bought a pet racoon since they're 'cleanly' Like a lil' racoon in a suit or something lol.

Pretty sure I know the answer but wondering if anyone has wise advice and tips on the situation. My neighbor that lives in the apartment below me got a great pyrenees-golden doodle mix about two years ago. To start the owner is a 65 year old short stubby man with many medical issues including a gimpy leg and bad back. I got my puppy around the same time so we would keep up together and let our pups play at the dog park.

If two adult healthy males confronts each other who will take it? Rules: No element of surprise or ambush. Both are aware of each other's presence. Scenario: Both are very desperate and hungry. Lynx just killed a deer and about to enjoy his meal. Then a hungry wolverine shows up to steal that kill from Lynx as they steal from cougars/ wolves. On YouTube I saw they run away leaving behind their meal for wolverine.

Hi, I hope this post is ok here. I'm looking for an animal that is not diurnal, that likes water to some extent at least, that is if possible kind (example of kind: if they kill prey, they attack the neck first to kill prey first, or they help/interact with other animals for any reason, for example to help with food, or to warn about enemies, or to be together when its cold, etc, any of these things is fine, no need to have all).

Why don't we engage with other species more often? For example, what if a few people rly liked wolves or something, and decided to help em out. Like crows do. Or help animals that migrate on land clear paths etc. Idk. Probably a good reason why we dont or shouldnt but. If I gotta pick sides? Im choosin the animals over us.
