How To Get A Bird Back Up The Chimney

10,000 Birds

It’s summer, you’re in your house, and suddenly there’s a commotion. There’s a small tap, then a really fast chittering sound – as if a garden gnome has come to life and is furiously shaking a tiny pair of maracas. You rush over to investigate, and there are birds in your fireplace. They’re Chimney Swifts. Chimney Swifts are remarkable birds who are having a harder and harder time finding brick chimneys in which to nest and raise their families.

The tail of the Motmot

10,000 Birds

Every time I travel into a new area, I try to do my due diligence and have a pretty good idea of what bird species I might expect to find. A few weeks ago, when we traveled to Guadalajara, Mexico, I researched the many different species, especially the hummingbirds. Somehow is all my studies, the Motmots were never added to my “possible” list.

Where Are You Birding This Third Weekend of July 2016?

10,000 Birds

Summer is full swing here in the Northern Hemisphere, which means a birder’s fancy turns to less predictable targets. Traditionally, we might start chasing butterflies or odes, but these days bring more colorful fare. Are you Pokébirding ? I’m still in Michigan enjoying the lake life, despite the prosaic (for a New Yorker) birding. Corey never gives up on avian observation, so look for him somewhere in the Empire State.

Watch Northern Flickers As They Are Coaxed From Their Cavity Nest

10,000 Birds

Unlike cavity nesting ducklings which hatch precocial (eyes open, covered with down and ready to go), most cavity nesting birds hatch altricial. They are usually naked, blind, unable to move around, and completely dependent on their parents for food and temperature regulation. As you can see, these 10 day old nestlings from a previous post are just beginning to open their eyes and huddle at the bottom of the cavity.

Now, you can get one, thanks to the world’s first avian blood bank. Best Bird of the Weekend (2nd of July 2016)

10,000 Birds

The dog days of summer are upon us though here at 10,000 Birds we call them bird days. This despite the heat and humidity sometimes making it seem that there are no birds to see. What is a birder to do but go somewhere hopefully less hot and more birdy? Both Mike and I saw birds more or less far from our homes this weekend. Mike’s Best Bird of the Weekend was the Caspian Tern (like the one above) that greeted him upon his arrival at Lake Michigan.

Tiny Hawk at Quebrada Gonzalez

10,000 Birds

The irony of birding in tropical forest is that although there are literally hundreds of bird species, a pretty high percentage of them are naturally rare. That is, they occur at very low densities in high quality habitat. It’s just the way it is, and we probably can’t have it any other way because individual birds don’t just compete with others of the same species, they also compete with a lot of other birds and who knows what else for food, shelter, and nest sites.

Lake Miranda

10,000 Birds

On our recent camping trip away that saw us going as far south as Burra Rock Conservation Reserve we travelled the highway south from Wiluna to Leinster. There is a lake system called Lake Miranda about 37 kilometres/ 23 miles before you get to Leinster and although it is very large lake system there is no guarantee that there will be any water in it at all.
