Swarovski BTX – A new era in birdwatching

10,000 Birds

Did you know that my wife actually invented the binocular spotting scope? I lack proof of this but she did, honestly. As a scout would say “On my honour it is so”. Seriously though, we were walking our dog at the local park when out of the blue she said (and she is not into birding at all) “ You know what would be great. If that telescope thingamajig of yours had two eyepieces instead of one.

Poor hedgehog. Did I do the right decision? I still think of my little fellow from times to times.

Reddit Animals

Hello! This story happend couple of years ago, mid 2019 I believe. It was an extraordinary hot summer. Anyway, I was walking around in one of my favorite parks in the middle of the night so I could barely see my feet in front of me. I just enjoyed being near all the trees and then I had to take a p**s. So I walked to a couple of maple trees when it suddenly felt as if I kicked a soft ball.

Birding Kabul, Afghanistan

10,000 Birds

Right. I did not actually go to Afghanistan for birding. I had another reason for that, trying to support a local NGO and its projects to educate Afghan women – something that is extremely important due to the current Taliban ban on female education past 6th grade. In a barely disguised advertising plug, I will explain more at the end of this post (and probably in some other posts describing my travels in Afghanistan).

Chronic Exposure in Colorado

10,000 Birds

Before anything else, a confession. Most of the lifers I saw in Denver were named after (in)famous people, so Messrs. Say, Bullock, Brewer, and Cassin will lose their English namesakes in the recently announced renaming game. To avoid writing a non-woke post I planned to mention scientific names only. And then I saw the species names attached to the aforementioned gentlemen’s avian namesakes and gave up… So, my attempt at political correctness has been thwarted by the 18th century rules of taxon

Ten Birds That Changed the World — a review

10,000 Birds

You might think that birds don’t change the world, birds are the world – but by his odd title, Ten Birds That Changed the World, author Stephen Moss means, he says, that birds have, in various ways, led to “paradigm shifts” in human history. Had it not been for the Wild Turkey, for instance, the first Pilgrims to America, the English ones, would not, possibly, have survived, he says.

Concerned about Rabies.

Reddit Animals

So I have a question for disease experts: I recently have scratched by a stray cat for no particular reason and I got my first shot of rabies vaccine the other day 12-15 hours later from exposure. The size of the scratch which located on my finger is less than a centimeter and I have shown no symptoms or whatsoever. Was I late for the vaccine? Should I be concerned?

How many bones does a Jaguar have?

Reddit Animals

I'm desperately trying to figure out how many bones a Jaguar has. It came up in conversation with a friend and I've tried every variation on "how many bones does a Jaguar/s skeleteon/Panthera onca etc have" in google and I keep finding absolutely nothing online. Every other big cat, you can find their bone count quite quickly. Tigers have 423 Lions have 230-240 Cheetas have 244 Leopards have 250 I feel like I'm going crazy.

Boyfriend's Mother Considering Euthanasia for her Dog Due to Allergies and Paw Fungus

Reddit Animals

This is not about financial constraints, rather, it stems from the emotional strain of dealing with a dog's health issues. She says that she is very depressed (she is just angry of the dog licks the paws). The alergies are under control with one medication. Despite my love for dogs, managing a severe autoimmune condition prevents me from having one, and that's why I opted for a cat.

For me, out of pure fascination with the creature since I was a child - it would have to be the Tyrannosaurus Rex. I don’t think people actually appreciate just how incredible AND terrifying a terrestrial apex predator twice the size of a bull Elephant, would be to see in the flesh.

Getting a Little Too Comfortable

Reddit Animals

I love this Mr. but he often gets too big for his kitty britches. For example, absolutely no cats allowed on the counters ever. I was sitting here reading and looked over yesterday and actually had to look 3 times to make sure I was actually seeing him calmly sitting on my counter looking at me (he didn’t stay long and a deep clean took place). Secondly, this is my Pouf for when I want to sit on the floor….he has used it regularly lately to the point where I have given up and let him have it.

do birds live slower?

Reddit Animals

I guess I’d like to know if other animals have a warped perception of time (relative to ours). Like, I know we say “7 dog years is 1 human year” or something to help kids understand why dogs/certain pets die so ‘young’, but; are there any animals that live slower (or faster) than us? I chose birds for the title because of their snappy head movement.
