Four hours in Guadalajara

10,000 Birds

As any avid birder knows, trips to a new part of the world, no matter what the occasion, are always exciting. The opportunity for new birds is a lure that is very seductive. Last weekend, my wife Jeanne and I needed to make a whirlwind trip across the Sea of Cortez, to the Mexico mainland to visit Guadalajara, the third largest city in Mexico. The whole reason for the trip was to interview a doctor for some upcoming medical work that Jeanne needs.

One Lucky Flicker

10,000 Birds

Thud! That awful sound of a bird hitting a window. What comes next? So many times these situations end badly, which is why we love a feel-good story. This beautiful Northern Flicker hit the window of a Family Dollar store in Beacon, NY. She was spotted and rescued by Michelle Basignani, who put her in a box in her car and called her friend Daniel Cronk.

Northern Flicker Nestlings at Ten Days

10,000 Birds

Continuing my Northern Flicker ( Collaptes auratus ) nestling observations from my last post , I was amazed at what I found when I opened the nest box this week. Northern Flicker nestlings hatch slightly asynchronously as the adults begin incubation one to two days before the last egg is laid. According to Birds of North America Online , on day 10 or 11 their eyes are beginning to open.

Where Are You Birding This First Weekend of June 2016?

10,000 Birds

The first weekend of June is, at least in the United States, our first full dose of unofficial summer. Yes, real summer doesn’t begin for another three weeks yet, but when weather heats up and non-breeding birds become increasingly scarce, spring is over! I’m headed down to rural Pennsylvania, where fun birds and dark skies no doubt await.

Case Closed: Double-crested Cormorants Have Their Day in Court

10,000 Birds

It’s a good day to be a Double-crested Cormorant —at least for those living in the eastern United States. Birds in the 24 states east of the Mississippi River are now protected from mass culls by a recent court ruling. The cormorants have long been targeted by those who fish—or who raise fish on farms—for depleting fish stocks. So the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has periodically conducted culls, arguing that removing Double-crested Cormorants from the equation would help support populations

We have a lot of birds of prey around Broome and the most common are the Black Kites and Whistling Kites, which you see on a daily basis around the town itself. Smaller birds of prey include the Nankeen Kestrel , which will roost on the light towers at the town’s sport ovals and Brown Goshawks are often observed among the houses on the edge of town and we have even had a Spotted Harrier drop by to cool off in our garden!

Some of us, present company included, are still enjoying a three-day holiday weekend. But assessing our Best Bird of the Weekend on Monday morning still makes sense, especially if the ritual drives you back out in search of more birds.
