Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes – Coracina novaehollandiae are a common bird species around our home in Broome, Western Australia. They are present throughout much of Australia and as their name would suggest they have a black face! They have one very distinct feature when they land, which is that they shuffle their wings. It appears as if they just need to lie their wings correctly to be comfortable and it is never quite right when they first land.

One of the old jokes I always hear at Christmas Bird Count dinners pops up we get to the ducks, which is now pretty early in the compilation thanks to the current taxonomic order. While I am still not so sure about China’s sense of humor – though admittedly, the issue is mostly a mismatch between what I think is funny and what the average Chinese thinks is funny, an issue that I have had in other countries as well – the country sure has its fair share of Laughingthrushes. 36, if my counting is right and there has been no very recent split or lump.

So here are some numbers: As I write this, on March 24th, my 2022 list includes 239 species, all from within the state of Michoacán. The latest species I picked up is the Spotted Wren , a rather common endemic here that I had somehow managed to not see, until three turned up in my garden this morning. 239 is easily enough to keep me at the front of the pack on eBird for Michoacán.

I don’t know what the experience is like in other parts of the world – so do let me know – but at least here in T&T, some of the absolute best waterbirding can be done at sewage ponds. It’s been a while to be honest, the last time I enjoyed the sights, sounds, and glorious smells of such an establishment was a few weeks ago on a dreary, rainy morning.
