A little over a month ago I was hiking up a mountain path outside of Innsbruck, Austria, with birders from around the world. When we reached our destination we were greeted with glasses of champagne. And while the bubbly really hit the spot it seemed like it was a bit of overkill. The hike hadn’t seemed so difficult that we needed to celebrate having completed it with champagne.

Brutal cold kept me locked up, which offered a perfect opportunity to appreciate the fifty shades of Northern Cardinals hanging around my house. Seriously, cardinals are both gorgeous and interesting , but their familiarity across most of North America breeds indifference if not contempt.

Noisy wing beats, heavy landing behind the stern, water splashing everywhere and then, a hit of a heavy wing on my upper arm…. A few years back, I birded northern Greece with a couple from Namibia. It had been a while since I saw Greater Flamingoes and was thrilled to see them again. Nicolaas, who can see them back home any day commented that they are the most numerous wading birds in the world (the “most numerous” equaling “the least interesting”).

The first weekend of April can prove treacherous for twitchers looking for species far afield. Without getting into details, I’ll simply suggest that you take improbable bird reports on Saturday with a healthy grain of salt. Sunday should bring us back to business as usual. I’m working and waiting for better weather, so I’ll probably just spend my weekend studying the field guide for the extremely birdy Central American country I’ll be visiting in a few weeks.

Your first weekend of spring or fall may have been uneventful in terms of birds, but pace yourself. We still have months of blissful migration ahead of us! Rochester is still wintry, but bird activity among the common species has picked up quite a bit. My best sighting was a Hairy Woodpecker puffed up to fight the cold. Last year I introduced you to a Tawny Frogmouth family north of Broome and the nest that they built followed by the family that they raised. This year we have been lucky enough to have the pair of Tawny Frogmouths in the local supermarket car park nest and raise one young. There are not many trees in the car park, but they had found one suitable to nest and the advantage of the car park is the lighting that will attract insects for their food.

I saw my first migratory Eastern Phoebe of 2017 this morning, 12 March, at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, thus kicking off spring for myself over a week early. Over the last ten years my average first phoebe has been the 21st of March, meaning that this bird was a full nine days earlier than average and beat last year’s first phoebe by six days. It’s also the earliest I’ve had over the last ten years.

I hadn’t until a little over a month ago when while flicking through one of my volumes of the Handbook of the Birds of the World (HBW) I came across it. I was looking for a new project to write about on Wikipedia, something unusual, and this species appealed for reasons I can’t quite define.

Every year, there is a phenomenon that occurs here in La Paz, as well as many major cities across the planet. Carnival just before Lent. Now, I am not going to go into the religious complications of this “event” but to say it can certainly turn a peaceful city into 7-10 days of 24/7 noise, music and craziness. While La Paz, is not really what I would call a tourist destination, but being a waterfront city in Mexico does allow for a certain amount of touristic activities.

For those of us who live full time on a boat, we use a nickname for those who do not, “Dirt Dwellers” Now don’t get me wrong, a very good portion of our friends all fall into that category. Many of those said “Dirt Dwellers” are also birders, who just cannot understand how I go without a backyard or similar area to enjoy the birds that tend to congregate around houses.

Spring is in the air, and all around the Baja desert I am seeing a plethora of species, all looking for love, in what appears to the right places. Last Sunday, it was never as obvious as it was with the small group of Phainopepla , Phainopepla nitens. I thoroughly enjoyed watching them swoop erratically from tree to tree to cactus. Males chasing males, males chasing females, much like a complicated, erratic dance routine.

As we are preparing to bid farewell to all of our winter time migrants, I took a three day break from work, and went to the Pacific side of the Baja. Conquista Agraria, along the Pacific Ocean, is a beach front area, bordered by arid sandy desert. There is a nice mix of rough, rocky outcrops, along with flat, almost white sandy beach sections. During the winter this area has a couple of pretty nice surf breaks that attracts quite a few surfer dudes and dudettes.

May 2009. After a wakeup call at highly uncivilized 3.45 am, at the crack of dawn I am sitting in a car by the Suslik (European ground squirrel) pasture. It is still cold. No Susliks are to be seen – they are waiting for the sun. Actually, I am not waiting for them, but for the Eastern Imperial Eagle to come here to hunt Susliks – an eagle from one of the last two remaining nests in Serbia.

But even if your local breezes are balmy, let’s hope they’re blowing beautiful birds in. This transitional time of year feels different depending on which side of the equinox you’re on, as Michael P. Garofalo once eloquently expressed: Last day of Winter, leafless walnut trees– form is emptiness. First day of Spring, clear sky to Mt. Shasta– emptiness is form.
