Nomadic life is slowly and surely taking root on our end, and this brings its fair share of challenges. All fades under the blinding lights of new backyard birds, however. Regular readers will be well aware that I am a huge fan of sitting at home, sipping coffee, and birding. The benefits of long-term observation of the same birds have fertilized my psyche in ways I never thought possible.

Lake Kerkini National Park in the north of Greece is the very best birding area in the Balkan Peninsula and definitely among the top ten hotspots of Europe. Surprisingly, despite being on the site of a former marsh, Kerkini is an artificial reservoir with the purpose of irrigation of arable fields. The lake lies at a mere 35 m / 115 ft a.s.l. and is towered by the forested, 2,030 m / 6,660 ft high Mt.

Birding Porto Lagos Lagoons, Greece, or the snake-cold Vergina lager

Visit to our next national park in Greece started with an excellent fish dinner in the Porto Lagos harbour, overlooking the pine forest with a heronry, and we had Black-crowned Night-Herons , Little Egrets and Grey Herons coming and going, a lone White Stork , a Common Tern , and numerous Yellow-legged Gulls in the harbour, together with half a dozen cats around our table.

So, in order to show a few more photos of the bird than the usual two or three had I included this bird in a post of birds seen around Wolongshan, Sichuan), here is one dedicated to the species.
