Instinctively and with lightning speed I raised the camera lens but paused thinking my hasty movement might cause alarm with the soldiers.

Best Bird of the Year 2011

It is my best bird because it is just such an incredible species, and looking at it made me realize that I had temporarily stopped to fully appreciate birds during the stressful last few years. This year I watched them from the day they arrived , until two chicks successfully hatched, the northernmost breeding record for the species.

Thought To Be Extinct For 100 Years

The story of the White-winged Guan , in some ways resembles the re-discovery of some species thought to be extinct. A Guan was collected in 1876 in a mangrove forest near the border between Peru and Ecuador. The decades of storage in a museum came after it was regarded as an extinct species. The Guan was declared extinct.

The adults presumably have already learned that humans are not usually good news even if not named Donald Trump. I guess you cannot be too choosy while traveling, as I have learned when on trips in Ecuador and other places. The Oriental Scops Owl may well be my favorite species passing through Nanhui, Shanghai during migration.
